(b. Victoria, Australia)
If a two-way mirror were to exist between my memory image and the surface of the picture plane, my aim is to synchronise the movement of my paintbrush with the specific and shifting details from my visual memory.
My practice examines the medium as an extension of the body to recall and recompose my own lived experiences onto the picture plane. I use observational drawing, which incorporates a ritualistic method of handcrafting charcoal onsite, to embody my environment. When I return to the studio, I use the medium of painting as a conduit for a deeper connection and a more comprehensive sense of my remembered experiences. I consider this process of interlacing medium, body and memory, as a means to reflect and expand my experience of visual perception and memory.
Stephanie Eather’s academic pursuits include a Graduate Certificate in Art History from Melbourne University in 2013, and a Bachelor of Fine Art (Drawing) obtained from RMIT in 2009. Eather’s artwork has been showcased in group and solo exhibitions across Victoria, New South Wales, and South Australia, and has been recognized through selection for prizes such as the Dobell Drawing Prize #21 and #22. In 2022, Stephanie was awarded the Bonner and Tonkin Drawing Award. She is currently represented by Nanda\Hobbs in Chippendale.
