Elle Wickens explores how the materiality and perception of birth operates through painting. Having worked as a birth photographer where she repeatedly witnessed both the physical and psychological force of birthing women, Wickens brings her embodied experience of birth into contemporary art practice. Her process prioritizes the bodily experience, allowing her to capture the nonverbal language system of birth. Rooted in psychoanalysis and philosophy, combined with a considered material approach consisting of breastmilk, placenta and suede, Wickens’ work seeks to forge new biological and socio-cultural understandings of birth and painting.
