My work uses the visual phenomenon of iridescence as a metaphor for multiplicitous reality. The viewing of an iridescent substance provides an opportunity to observe both surface and layers of depth within the same moment. In my work, the experience of viewing multiple layers simultaneously is likened to accessing multiple simultaneous realities. I describe this dialectical experience as a visual and cerebral “shimmer”.
I use shimmer as a way to visualise and navigate binaries, opposition, contradiction and paradox in everyday life, as well as in art. My work makes use of layering and juxtaposition of both materials and ideas in an attempt to simulate iridescent effects. Processes including collage, weaving, painting and machine embroidery have enabled me to investigate concepts that exist in some form of cultural or political opposition. Masculine and feminine tropes, painting and textiles, the decorative and the sublime, traditional and contemporary, digital and analogue, visibility and invisibility, body and landscape, and power and powerlessness are just some countering “realities” that can be seen to exist simultaneously. The consideration of these multiplicitous realities renders my work, and my thinking, iridescent.
